Negotiations
Negotiations is the softer side of navigating the GE/GBG and sometimes it is easier (and more economical) to negotiate your way through some Encounters.
Some Encounters in the GE will be impossible to guarantee a correct combination in 4 turns, the best that can be hoped for is luck and minimizing the damage in those cases. The Extra Turn boost from the Tavern will provide for an additional Turn and try and make the most of it by having a nice stockpile of Goods available. Hopefully, these tips will increase the likelihood of success, but the best way is to try it out, gain experience and gradually refine technique(s).
*** General Strategy ***
- Turn 1) Use your most plentiful and expendable resources to identify the known, valid resources (in yellow) that will be used for this negotiation.
- Turn 2) Test any remaining resources for validity and if there are open positions, shift the known resources to test for position placement.
- Turn 3) Shift known resources accordingly to continue identifying position placement.
- Turn 4) Place your known winners in the correct position and ‘guess’ at unknowns.
*** General Tips ***
- Overall, it is about elimination of unknown information for determination of the correct resource placement.
- Try and have a balanced mix of Goods from your current Age and the previous Age. Starting out, having a nice stockpile of goods will be difficult as you are utilizing them to complete your Technology Tree of your Age.
- Avoid duplicating your guesses in multiple columns if you can avoid it (exception is for simple negotiations and a resource is something that is plentiful such as Coins or Supplies).
- More often than not; the best guess would be the available resource you have the most of.
- Plentiful and expendable resources are essentially resources that are easy to come by and anything you do not have to trade to get. For instance, place Coins and Supplies first, then Goods that you manufacture second and so forth. This approach conserves your harder-to-get resources.
- Always look at the results of the Turn (and previous Turns) to understand which resources/positions you know are valid (‘known’). In the early Turns, focus on figuring out the unknown resources instead of worrying about where the known resources go and place the resources you haven’t placed yet. Then, in the latter Turns you can focus on which positions to place the known resources.
- If you have more spots to fill versus known resources, you know that at least one resource will be REPEATED, and it is simpler to shift the placement of goods to the right in the next Turn (and guess at the remaining).
- While it may be more immediately rewarding to get a correct answer in an early Turn, that will oftentimes come back to haunt you later. If you have a guarantee (this Good goes in this Position), use that position to test another resource for validity (for another position) as it will increase the probability of a correct guess in the later Turns.
- Another way of saying the above: Don’t place correct resources in early turns but use those columns to continue testing to learn which ones could be correct in later turns.
- And yet another way: Place known resources in incorrect positions to further test for the potential of correct position … get the point?
- If you have not figured out over half to three quarter positions by the 4th Turn, it would be best to save your resources and restart the Negotiations (unless you just really want to hope-and-guess).
- You WILL HAVE multiple positions open on the 4th Turn; work from the highest probability position to the lowest. An example would be that I have tested a resource in all other positions, so I know 100% that it belongs to specific position. After placement of that resource, that may have ‘raised’ the probability of other positions to 100% and so forth until I am down to educated guesses or straight up ‘swags’.
