Questions and Answers
Welcome to our Q&A! This was put together to hopefully address some of your larger questions as you begin to explore the game and our Guild. Please read through and feel free to ask questions or discuss over in the [❓] General Q&A/Info/Requests or 🍝🍷 Dave's Bar 🍺🍔. Thanks!
- I am new, followed the in-game tutorial and just joined a guild, what now?
Relax, you have joined the right Guild =]. An individual can be successful without ever staying in a guild very long but there are many efficiencies in working together, thus some of our success is ensuring your success. This is a very slow game when getting started – it is a marathon and not a sprint; have patience, explore and when in doubt, ask questions!
- What should I be doing?
For now, work on your City layout to maximize the space for your Housing, Supply and Goods buildings. The best way to learn is to look at other cities and mimic what they are doing until you are ready to tackle the finer aspects of city layout. As an aside, do NOT spend any Diamonds on anything but Land Expansions – it is a premium currency and should be hoarded as much as possible.
To make your experience more enjoyable, I would recommend to not research any technology beyond the Iron Age (IA) until you have a good set of Great Buildings (GB). The base recommendation is an Oracle of Delphi, Tower of Babel, and Lighthouse of Alexandria. My recommendation would be to not leave the Bronze Age (BA) until then as well as include a Statue of Zeus and possibly an Observatory but seeing that you are with us; the Arc is recommended and the Observatory can come later. At least gather a complete set of Blueprints (BP) even if you don’t construct them yet.>
- I hear this talk of the Antiques Dealer or Settlements. Where is everything?
Gotcha. A map is located here, with each area is labeled to help you easily find the area of interest.
- I spent my diamonds and have advanced the technology tree beyond the Iron Age, did I mess up?
We all have done that - all is not lost; it will just take a bit to let your City catch up so a bit more patience will be needed. At this point, you will need to stop spending FP on research and focus on getting your initial set of blueprints (BP). Diamonds are recoverable through participation in the Guild Expedition (GE) or Guild Battlegrounds (GBG).
If you are still in the Iron Age (or below), feel free to split your FP between research and Blueprints so you are progressing in both. However, low-level Great Buildings will only be around a short while …
- Blueprints, what are those?
You probably see many of the different messages regarding “FP Swap Chains” constantly being refreshed to the top of your Message Center. These are other folks in the Guild utilizing their Forge Points (FP) and obtaining rewards for doing so (FP “Packs”, Medals and Blueprints). Read the “FP SWAP THREADS!” in our How Things Work section and put your FP to good use by starting to collect your sets of BP.
Again, low-level Great Buildings will only be around a short while so when you have enough FP, apply it in a FP Swap to ensure your place for blueprints. Don’t worry, once you have all of these you will switch to worrying about Medals. 😊
- I have spent a few weeks in the FP Swap Chains and have accumulated a set of 9 blueprints for my first great building. What do I do with them?
Rework your City layout to make room for this new building and once you have the goods to construct, build the Great Building (GB) and create a “Sticks-to-Bricks” group message so we can all help you get it raised up and working for you!
As a side note, this one of the few rules we have: if there is a new building posted in a Sticks-to-Bricks (S2B) thread, please contribute a minimum of one FP to the building.
As an experienced note, do not build the Colosseum, Notre Dame, Hagia Sophia, St. Basil’s Cathedra, Capitol or Deal Castle GBs unless you just really want to.
- Is there a way to get blueprints faster?
Absolutely, explore the game more by providing Aid to your guildmates, Friends and even folks in your Neighborhood. You can provide Aid every 24 hours, and each time you Aid someone, you will get a chance at receiving a Blueprint!
- This sounds like a lot and I don’t have time to play very much.
One of the things that I like about FoE is that it does not require a lot of time in a single sitting and can be played 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there. You will probably run into many others that have multiple cities due to the entertainment factor at zero cost and low time requirements.
- The World Map … what is going on there?
The World Map, or Campaign Map, is where you can acquire land that has resources to aid in Goods production. Territories of the World Map are grouped according to an Age. Each Age will only have 2 resources that provide a bonus to your Goods buildings which is why players will utilize the “Trades” thread to trade resources.
You can go beyond your current City’s Age in expanding the Campaign Map if you have either the resources to negotiate for the sector or the ability to overcome the defending army as each Age area will typically have at least 2 Land Expansions that can be acquired (those Territories that have little land plots on them). However, this runs the risk of not being able to complete Daily Challenges when those involve the Campaign Map. You can avoid those types of quests by not sending the Scout to Territories.
- Okay, so I have unlocked the ability to play in the Guild Expeditions; what do I do?
A: Each week, a new Guild Expedition (GE) will start, and the game will automatically place our Guild in competition against other guilds. Guilds score points by how many eligible players participate and how far they can trek the expedition map. Guilds are awarded ‘Crowns’ through individual participation and their placement (1st, 2nd or 3rd) in that week’s competitions. After enough Crowns are earned, the guild advances a level to provide bonuses to all the players.
The GE is composed of multiple levels each with a set of Encounters. Each encounter can be navigated through fighting or negotiating. Fighting is straightforward whereas negotiating is loosely based on a board game called ‘Mastermind’. I will defer to internet resources to help you here.
Rewards from the GE range from more troops, supplies, goods, buildings, FP and diamonds. There is a Great Building (GB) associated with the GE which is called the Temple of Relics (ToR). You will automatically collect these Blueprints (BP) so no need to spending precious FP to acquire them.
There are pro’s and con’s of this GB (rewards vs footprint), but I don’t place a lot of value for beginning players due to (a) the size of the space it takes up in the City and (b) the aforementioned GB’s should be a higher priority. Once you are set though, add this GB to your City but carefully consider upgrading it past Level 1 once you weigh the return vs application of your FP to other GB levels.
- I keep hearing this talk of the Guild Battle Grounds and have no idea what that is – can you break this down for me?
The Guild Battle Grounds, or GBG, is a mini-game that is played against other guilds on our World. Every 14 days, a new GBG season is released and lasts for 11 days. Each guild attempts to acquire Provinces on the Battle Map to generate Victory Points which are awarded every hour. At the end of the 11 days, the guild with the most VP is the winner.
The GBG provides individual rewards (traditional rewards plus SoH fragments) for each Advancement. When a certain quantity of Advances is made, a Province is acquired. At the end of GBG season, individuals are rewarded with Statue of Honor (SoH) fragments and the Guild is rewarded with Crowns (for leveling).
Advances are completed by either negotiating or fighting. Unlike the GE, you cannot go “around” a particular opponent army composition or the goods requirement for the current Advancement; HOWEVER, there is a work-around (please see the How Things Work thread).
- This is way to slow, I don’t have very many forge points to spend!
A: This is the nature of the game strategy. There are buildings that can provide you with more Forge Points (FP). The basic building is the Shrine of Knowledge (SoK) which also provides you with coins! Look for these and fragments of these in your Daily Quest as well as any Event Quests during the special events that occur within the game.
There are other Great Buildings (GB) that provide daily FP as well as special buildings (Events or Settlements). You will begin recognizing them as you will see them in other cities that you peeked in on figuring out how to lay out your own City.
- 5-FP, 10-FP … 20-FP Swap Chains – I will never have enough FP for that!
Oh, but you will! ... Just not starting out. Do not think of these as punitive, but they are set up to allow for more opportunity. The higher-level FP Swaps are more geared towards advanced players (i.e., high FP-generating cities), to utilize to ensure they are not swamping the lower level FP Swaps and crowding you out of rewards (Blueprints!). The more advanced players typically opt-out of the lower FP Swaps which is why we do not have “Don’t Leave” tag on them.
This doesn’t mean that you cannot use them. For example, you are rewarded 50 FP from working the Guild Expedition (GE) and want to place them on a certain GB in those FP Swaps. You do not have to use your FP all at once in a single Swap Chain but can spread it over several if desired.
- I am not getting as much blueprints as I would like. Is there more I can do?
Certainly! One of the rewards from the Guild Expedition (GE) are Blueprints (BP). The further you can trek into the GE, the more opportunities you will get to win BP and, in some occasions, you can win 2 or 3 BP in a single encounter.
- I have a frowny face for my happiness, is there anything I can do?
A: There could be multiple reasons why your Happiness is under-performing. First, do you have the best buildings that can provide Happiness? If not, upgrade those within your Age (example: replace Arch’s for Bathhouses if you are in the Iron Age). The Aid bonus applied from guild-mates and friends will go further for those buildings.
Second, look at your Population? Is it close to zero? If not, remove some houses to bring down the population to a more manageable level. Third, look to Great Buildings (GB) such as the Oracle of Delphi – or simply jump into the Alcatraz GB. It provides Happiness and can be leveled higher for more Happiness without utilizing more space in your City.
Last, if you have many small decorations look to removing them and concentrate your Happiness on as few structures as possible. These will redirect any Aid you may be getting from other buildings that provide much more benefit.
- I am not getting enough goods together to make anything worthwhile happen, is there another way to get goods?
Sure. The Guild Expedition (GE) offers potential Goods rewards. An even easier way to obtain Goods is through Great Buildings (GB) such as the Lighthouse of Alexandria (LoA). By simply constructing this GB, you will earn 8 Goods every day! In addition, you will receive a Supply bonus that will increase the output of those buildings as well. Each time you level an LoA, the Goods reward will increase. This structure is a very nice trade-off as Goods building require a lot of houses and supplies and you can increase your Goods output without additional population or use of supplies!
- This guild expedition thing seems a bit daunting, is there a simple way I can dip into it?
While not optimal, but a great start is to build 2 ranging barracks (slingers/archers) and 2 heavy barracks (warrior/legionnaire) of the military unit of your current Age. Go ahead and spend the Coin and Supply to unlock the next 2 slots in those buildings (do NOT spend Diamonds though). After a bit, you will have 8 ranging units and 8 heavy units.
Next, click the Guild Expedition (GE) icon, it will bring you to the GE map. Select the first Encounter and then select Attack. In the Army window, place 4 range units and 4 heavy units and simply select Auto Battle. After you have won, select the Reward that follows that Encounter.
After two battles you will want to exit the GE map, look to your barracks and Produce replacement units. Once those are replaced, rinse and repeat. Selecting the Attack option instead of Auto Battle, will open the Battle Map where you can individually control your units. You will want to start exploring this in the future as the combat AI isn’t the best at strategy and managing military units.
Note: If you are in Early Middle Ages (EMA), the mounted ranger is not a very good unit. You will want to use Heavy Calvary and Armored Infantry.
- I feel like I am not receiving any aid from anyone, is there is anything I can do?
Aiding is a reciprocating exercise and there are a couple of things to keep in mind:
- Aid your guild-mates at EVERY opportunity
- Aiding players in your neighborhood is a good idea as well
- You may need to refresh your friends list (drop old and add new) from time-to-time as you may have players that have quit the game
There are two main methods of refreshing your friends list, they are:
- 1) Send a group message to all of your friends and request them to leave the message. Wait for a period of a couple of days and then delete the friends that are still in that message as you have determined that they have not been active.
- 2) Only Aid your friends through the Events log of your Town Hall for a few days (if they aid you, it will show up here and then you can reciprocate by aiding back in the same screen). Then go to your friends list and look to see who has not been aided and remove them.
Now, add new friends from your current neighborhood until you reach maximum capacity.
- I have unlocked better housing but I have no space in my city for swapping out houses without deleting some buildings. Is there anything I can do?
A: Sure! You don't need additional space to replace houses (or roads). Simply place the house or road you want over the old house and it will upgrade it in the same spot; no moving and no selling necessary!
- I sometimes skip the dailies but other times the dailies skip me because it resets at an inconvenient time. I am bit worried that I might be missing out, can I do something?
Yes, you can adjust the time that your Daily Challenge quest resets. Open the Daily Challenge by clicking the little gear icon next to the timer. This will only work for the Daily Challenge but not for Event Quests that are in the Main Quest Line once you have caught them up.
- Sometimes when I go to negotiate in the Daily Challenge, GE, GBG or an Event Quest it asked me for diamonds. Will these always cost diamonds?
No, you should only spend Diamonds on Land Expansions (or unless you just really want to). Negotiations will only ask for Diamonds under two scenarios: (1) you do not have enough Goods to attempt multiple turns and (2) you have exhausted all of your Turns in the negotiations. To detail …
- (1) The Negotiation may ask for a quantity of 3 Goods for negotiating character. If the game calculates that you do not have sufficient Goods, it will ask for Diamonds. Suppose you start the negotiations with 7 specific Goods. After two Turns, you would only have 1 Good left, thus the game would request Diamonds. In some instances, the game might even ask for Diamonds on the first Turn.
- (2) The game will ask for 10 Diamonds to continue negotiations if you have used up all 3 standard Turns or 4 Turns if you provided Tavern Silver to activate the Extra Turn boost. Regarding this Extra Turn, it some cases it will not apply to the Daily Challenge (and some Event Challenges) but it will always apply to the GE Negotiations.
- I am really at a loss seeing all these GBs, so it makes it really confusing as to which one I should really focus on as opposed to getting some easy blueprints. Can you help with that?
Sure. If there is the possibility of getting a blueprint (BP) for almost nothing (let’s say 10 FP or fewer) and you do not have that GB – Take it! Even if you do not plan on building it anytime in the near or far future. You should know that your first set of complete BP will carry the GB up to Level 10. After that, a complete set of BP will be required every level thereafter so it may behoove you to snag those cheap prints.
When it comes to focusing, I would recommend the Castel del Monte (CdM) as your first Great Building (GB). Why? Here is where the analytical part of the game comes into play. Out of the spread of buildings available to you starting out that offer a combat bonus; the CdM also comes with a great secondary bonus – it provides FP. So you will be increasing your FP-generating capabilities at the same time you are increasing your combat effectiveness.
Here is the analysis. In order to level a Statue of Zues to 10, you will need a total of 2,500 FP. A Cathedral of Aechen – 2,950 FP and the Castel del Monte – 3,410. At level 10, all these GBs provide a 30% combat attack bonus; however, only the CdM will provide 6 FP per day. You can then consider the FP provided from this GB as interest earned which can then towards leveling your other GBs. In addition, while leveling this GB using whichever method you choose, you can be working towards the opportunity of obtaining BP of the other GBs.
- So there are these “events” that are part of the game, what are they and they sound like a lot of work!
An Event is a time-limited side game that can reward you with a number of things whether its FP, Coin, etc., but most importantly – Event buildings. These are typically residential buildings that offer additional features such as Goods, FP, Coin, etc., but most importantly to those starting out – they offer Population.
It is recommended that when you have a new City and are just starting out, focus much of your time in completing Event Quests and attempt to gain the Event building and as many upgrades as you can. This will help you manage your City space better as well as a huge potential to eliminate the need for a Tower of Babel (ToB or Babel) GB, which in turn, will eliminate the need to invest FP into that GB.
Sometimes this doesn’t always work out due to timing or other challenges and it may take a couple of Events to properly understand how the Events work to maximize your gain so you will not have to acquire the ToB, reduce the investment needed, or, remove it from your City altogether.
